Aden Clarke
North Cronulla (NSW)
North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club is proud to nominate Aden Clarke as our Hidden Legend.
Aden has been a member of North Cronulla SLSC since he was 5 years old. Aden has Down Syndrome and wants to achieve the same things as other young people including active participation in the life of the community around them.
Aden took on the challenge to obtain his Bronze Medallion and become a Lifesaver with his friends at the Surf Club. He now is an active patrolling member at North Cronulla Beach.
Currently Aden is a member of the North Cronulla Sea Turtles, an inclusive group who compete in carnivals in the their favourite disciplines. North Cronulla is proud to have Aden Clarke as not only a competing member of our Club, but a qualified Lifesaver on our Beach.
Andrew Josland
Era (NSW)
Andrew (Josso) has been an active member of Era for over 40 years. He has always been a powerhouse of energy and enthusiasm. A club leader from the beginning he has organised and motivated many competition crews. He has served on the committee for over 20 years. During this time he consistently goes above and beyond club duties, organising impromptu social events and he can always be found pottering around the club making improvements and providing new ways to make the club better for members. He is a much loved member of our club.
Anne Woodward
Era (NSW)
Anne was a part of the first women Lifesavers, when women were finally allowed to do their Bronze in 1980. She continues to patrol today. To attend patrol she has to trek to the beach through 2 kilometres of bushland and back again. Anne is a much loved and valued member, always there to lend a hand and offer her sage and calm advice.
Ashligh Booth
Surfers Paradise (QLD)
Ashligh is the first female Club Captain of Surfers Paradise SLSC. She held the Vice Club Captain role in 2019/20 and stepped to to Club Captain part way through the 20/21 season to support her fellow members.
She joined the Club in 2008 while working in the Supporters Club, despite her family already involved in a Club further south.
She holds multiple Life Saving awards including Silver Medallion IRB Driver and is an active trainer for Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate.
In just under 15 years, she’s amassed almost 800 beach patrol hours at Surfers Paradise, one of the busiest beaches in the country.
During the January 2022 floods in northern NSW, Ash was instrumental in co-ordinating Surfers Paradise crews for flood relief efforts and also directly participated.
Athenia Pascoe
Clovelly and Coogee (NSW)
After many years as a Nipper parent I was asked why I didn’t have my Bronze Medallion so I achieved it in March 2018 just before my oldest child achieved their SRC. From joining my first Patrol at Clovelly SLSC in 2019 I have tried to add value which included Clovelly awarding me Club member of the year in 2020. Currently I am a BM Trainer and Assessor, Patrol Captain and MPO Officer for Clovelly SLSC, and I am also a patrolling Club member at Coogee SLSC. I have 73 awards including IRBC, SMBM and ART and aiming to get my Drivers soon. I also volunteer as Director of Finance for Surf Life Saving Sydney Branch. Being a single parent of two school age children and working full-time, I love contributing to an organisation with a volunteer culture that responds to emergencies, educates and keeps people safe at Australia’s beaches.
My story is not unique and there are so many selfless volunteers in SLSA that have contributed longer and more time than I have. Hopefully my story helps Nippers parents get their BM when their child starts Nippers and others to take on other roles like being a Trainer or Patrol Captain or achieve higher awards to assist patrols. If I can do it, anyone can.
Bellah Walker
Cronulla (NSW)
Hardworking and disciplined, Bellah is a dedicated athlete – it’s no wonder she has dominated beach events since she was a nipper.
Having won a multitude of State, National and World Lifesaving titles, in both beach sprinting and flags, she is a near-automatic selection in State and National teams.
A conscientious patrolling member and part of a CSLSC family dynasty, Bellah proudly wears sky blue, black and white and is part of the CSLSC community. Studying Education, and coaching fellow club members, Bellah is an important female role member and a wonderful ambassador for lifesaving.
Ben Bedford
Seacliff (SA)
Ben is a passionate member who has been involved with the club since 2011, joining with his young boys and volunteering as an Age Group Leader to support the club and his kids in the activity.
Gaining his bronze medallion and being an active Masters competitor in all areas of Surf Life Saving Ben embodies the values of the movement, mateship, passion and is keen to help wherever he can.
At Seacliff, Ben took on the role of boat captain to develop the area and increase participation and over the past 5 years has been integral to the development and raising the profile of this aspect within the club. Ben has supported new members to engage in the activity, assisting with training and development of members to increase their skills in this area. Ben is a valued patrol member and well respected amongst the club for his volunteering and passion.
Brad Turner

In recent years, Brad has been a member of the CSLSC Executive team and is the current CSLSC President. He was part of the team that delivered the upgrade to this iconic heritage building proving updated facilities and maintaining a priceless community asset.
Brad is the driving force behind the Club’s Strategic Plan – creating a ‘lifestyle for a lifetime’, and in so doing, framing the way Cronulla will continue to service and support the community for the next 100 years.
Breanna Andrews
Surfers Paradise (QLD)
Embracing “If you can’t beat them, join them”, Breanna joined in 2003 while she was working in the Supporters Club and hasn’t looked back.
The proud mother of two boys patroled right up until the last few weeks of their arrivals and was back on the beach with them under the tent when they were just a few weeks old!
She holds a range of Life Saving awards including trainer and Assessor qualifications, helping train Lifesavers and Nippers.
In 2006, Breanna represented the Surfers Paradise SLSC as their Summer Surf Girl where she was awarded Runner-Up, but came away with a win none the less when her now husband proposed to her on stage in front of the entire audience.
Continuing to contribute to Life Saving, Breanna is the Club’s Administration Officer, and has worked for the Club for 10 years.

Cate Kyling
Coogee (NSW)
Hello! I am Cate Kyling from Coogee SLSC, NSW, and I have just turned 18.
In 2010, when my parents signed me up for Coogee SLSC Nippers after moving back to Australia from Dubai, little did myself or my family know that I would be joining a community that would take part in raising me and shaping me into the person that I am today. In order for SLS as an organisation to be challenged to be more progressive, it is essential that Youth members are retained and encouraged to voice their opinions on the inequalities they may see in clubs. Motivated to continue the Youth engagement programs in my Surf Club, I was the assistant Junior Captain in 2021, Junior Captain in 2022 and am currently Vice Captain on my patrol, where I also hold the awards of FA, ART and IRB Driver and Crew. In these leadership roles, I found out that it was vital to establish and build upon a healthy community that all Youth members of SLS could grow up in. Being exposed to such great leadership within my club, various State Camps and through the incredible SLSA Women’s Mentoring program, I was allowed to express my concerns, ideas and, sometimes crazy goals that I had. This then led me to apply to join Sydney Branches Youth Advisory Team, where we hope to cultivate and spread a positive culture throughout Surf Clubs. Creating a supportive, safe and overall exciting community for Youth to be a part of is vital in retaining the Youth members that will be the future leaders of the SLS organisation and who will be the ones that lead SLSA into an even more progressive future. I am extremely proud to be a part of this organisation and am extremely thankful for all of the amazing opportunities it has provided me. I hope that by continuing my journey in SLS I can give back to the communities that have been essential to my on-going development into who I am and will be.
Chris Ashton
Brunswick Heads (NSW)
Chris has patroled the beach at Brunswick Heads for over 10 years as a bronzie, advanced resuscitation and IRB crew.
He has completed over 100% of patrolling obligations regularly.
Chris also was a part of the assistance given to the communities surrounding Brunswick SLSC during the 2022 flood emergency by both crewing IRB’s and completing flood rescues and welfare door knocks/evacuations, as well as working in community run evacuation centres.
Christopher Jacobson
Ulverstone (TAS)
Chris is the current Chair Life Saving for SLSA. In addition to this he is on the RWC patrol for NSW, a branch Duty Officer and patrol member in both NSW and Tas. He is an unsung hero that does thousands of hours each year to support and drive Life Saving. He chairs the National Life Saving Advisory Committee, sits on numerous groups to develop education resources, runs courses around the country and is available to assist with any and all things that further develop and promote Life Saving.
Damion Burrage
Goolwa (SA)
Damion is an active, enthusiastic, valued and motivated member of Goolwa and logs over 150 hours each season. He has been instrumental in the Nippers program passing on his surf skills. Damion also undertakes various roles at State level as a member of the Emergency Operations Group as a Duty Officer and RWC operator. He has a focus on Life Saving operations, service delivery and continuous improvement. Damion mentors and encourages youth members to find their own path in Life Saving. When flat water clubs come down to Goolwa, you will always find Damion in the surf with them passing on his skills and supporting them to gain confidence in the surf. His focus is to make sure every member has the opportunity to improve themselves. He always ensures that all the club facilities and equipment are to a high standard, often quietly travelling 200 km to fix a maintenance issues before the weekend. He was a SA State Surf Lifesaver of the Year finalist in 2022
Dave Madew
Bilgola (NSW)
Dave works tirelessly at the club as a general member, patroller, committee member and IRB Captain. After spending many years at the IRB helm, he had planned to step down but with no eligible takers at the club, he has offered to hold onto the role until an eligible candidate steps up. Despite the countless hours he puts into IRB training and management at the club, he is the first person to offer to relieve someone who cannot fulfil their IRB crew/driver duties on a given patrol. He is extremely generous with his time and contributing to members including myself. This is only the obvious stuff I have observed. As is always the case, there will be plenty that is invisible and unnoticed with regards to his contribution
David Maguire
North Steyne (NSW)
David has volunteered for decades as a surf Lifesaver and rowing sweep and has done an amazing job at North Steyne SLSC. In addition to patrolling, driving IRB and applying his skills gained during his policing career (now retired), he teaches new rowers, mentors new sweeps and creates a positive, uplifting environment that supports others. David also invests a significant portion of his own money running a vehicle, covering costs and donating to ensure fees don’t become an obstacle – especially for juniors. On top of this, Dave is an amazing and encouraging sweep of women, and will contest the George Bass as well as the carnival season.
David Moore
Tacking Point (NSW)
David Moore is a one of TPSLSC’s key trainers, organisers and helpers. He runs board training for Nippers twice a week and is at Nippers every weekend, setting up for club carnivals, branch carnivals and general training. He is a patient and generous teacher to the young children. Assisting all who give it a go, no matter their skill level and providing them with a sense of confidence and achievement that progresses their ability. He is encouraging, has a great attitude and a real enthusiastic role model for the club. On Sundays you can find him running the seafood raffle raising funds for the club.
Dion Dissanayake
Bellambi (NSW)
Dion wanted to tell everyone that Surf Life Saving is proud, safe and welcoming and that people can come as they are on the beach … so he decided to design Pride Surf Rescue Boards to be dispatched on beaches all over Australia! Surf Clubs across the country were so excited about this opportunity that over 120 boards were ordered by 85 clubs across Australia and even all the way to the UK! Keep an eye out for these boards on your local beach 🙂
Dion Ezzy
Coolangatta (QLD)
Dion has been a volunteer at Coolangatta for 22 seasons. He has been awarded every award at club level, and has been awarded Volunteer Lifesaver of the year at Branch level twice. He has been Club Captain for 6 seasons, and has had many other roles such as IRB captain, patrol captain and training & accessing. Dion spends most weekends helping out at the club either filling in patrols, water safety for Nippers, or helping out at numerous fundraisers, even being Santa at our club’s yearly fundraiser for photos on the beach.
Dr Annalyse Crane
Cronulla (NSW)
Like any GP, Anna is a passionate member of the community – but she certainly takes things to the next level as a volunteer surf lifesaver.
Anna joined the club when her daughter joined the nippers. Not one for the sidelines, Anna undertook her Bronze Medallion training. Fast forward five years, she is now an IRB enthusiast and holds her Advanced Resuscitation techniques and Silver Medallion. Anna is now training squads, a nipper Age Manager, and Patrol Captain (and a former Sydney Branch Patrol Captain of the Year).
Boundless energy and community spirit, Anna is on the CSLSC Management Committee and enjoys the Master’s competition. It’s hard to think of something Anna won’t have a go at, and as she says, “no one appreciates how much you get out of volunteering until you do it”.
Elissa Hancock
Era (NSW)
Elissa has patroled with Era for over 14 years. She was our first female President, serving on our committee for many years. We are so proud that she now represents Surf Life Saving at the Branch, serving as the Deputy President.
Elissa has always improved the quality of service the club and branch provides its members. Her passion for Life Saving is infectious. She is tireless, not only in advancing the organisation as a whole but our club as well where she continues to actively patrol and is a trainer, assisting our team to foster our young Nippers through the club to become valued active members.
Emma Larssen
Cronulla (NSW)
A passionate surf lifesaver for over 20 years, Emma has been an Executive and Management Committee representative and continues to be an active patrolling member. Her passion for lifesaving recently led her to the Governor General for community service.
In terms of lifesaving, Emma has her Bronze Medallion, IRB Crewman and Driver, Silver Medallion, Patrol Captain, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and Spinal Management qualifications.
As a competitor, Emma is a true all-rounder having represented CSLSC at the State, National and World titles in ocean, beach, boats, champion lifesaver, IRB racing and surfboard riding. Emma is also a qualified Surf Sports Official and Surf Sports Coach.
In 2010, Emma travelled to Bali as an Australian Youth Ambassador through AusAID. Working Indonesia Surf Life Saving Association, her success led to an extended role as an Australian Volunteer for International Development through DFAT where she helped establish a successful Nippers program for local children.
In 2019, Emma was one of 16 participants in the SLSA National Leaders’ Masterclass. Recognition of the fact that Emma is an extraordinary woman who continues to give selflessly to CSLSC and the local community.
Felicity MaCarthur
Bondi (NSW)
Fearless leader – currently acting as Club President (in addition to her PC and Vice President duties) and smashing it!; creator and organiser of fun activities such as destination patrols; inclusive advocate who brought the wheelchair ramp to Bondi and runs Dippers; shares her wealth of knowledge as a Bronze trainer and is part of the Women’s Leadership Program; dedicated competitor in Champion Life Saving. She’s the best girl in our club, works tirelessly and often without acknowledgement, knows how to have a great time and the best advocate for Surf Life Saving.
Gareth Gray
Seacliff (SA)
Gareth has been involved at Seacliff since 2014 supporting his 2 young boys who joined the club and as he got more involved Gareth achieved his Bronze Medallion in 2015 and went on to serve on the management committee in the capacity of Treasurer. Gareth assisted the club with substantial fundraising and sponsorship efforts and worked tirelessly to ensure the building debt was paid off quickly and the club was in a positive financial position to develop further. Gareth has since taken on the role of Vice Patrol Captain and spent many hours managing the members and supports the club to ensure our patrol agreement was met, particularly during the challenges presented through Covid pandemic. Back in the role of Treasurer, Gareth continued to provide diverse ideas, develop opportunities and work to achieving the best position for the club.
Garry Jackson
Kurrawa (QLD)
Garry is the quiet achiever. He is the one at the club first thing every weekend making sure the IRB is fuelled, the patrol gear is ready to go and negotiating the best place to set the red and yellow flags with the patrol captain. He has over 200 hours of active service registered on his member’s portal this season. Significant, but probably a fifth of his contribution. He just does..and he loves just doing – Waverunner patrols, talking to the old boys, helping with BBQs, attending fundraisers, officiating, Duty Boat responsibilities at carnivals. Most of all he loves the friendships and mates he gets to spend time with at the Club and on the beach. He is the clubbie that can be relied on when something just needs to get done, no matter how big or small.
Gary Hore
Avoca (NSW)
Gary Hore exemplifies service to country, community and Life Saving. He served Australia for 52 years including active war service in Vietnam.
He moved to Avoca Beach in 1985 where he continued his community service. He joined ABSLSC in 2005, working energetically as a Lifesaver, including 8 years as Patrol Captain. He has mentored new Patrol Captains, younger patrol members and has been integral to his Patrol remaining rescue ready and the pre-eminent patrol in numerous years as recently in 2021 and 2022.
Gary remains an active part of the Patrol he once led as Captain. He has maintained individual first aid and surf rescue skills which makes him a standout Lifesaver. Additionally, he has co-led the Avoca Beach ANZAC Day Dawn Service held at ABSLSC for many years which now attracts 5000+ people. He volunteers as a yoga stretch leader on Wednesday mornings for a free class attended by 20 regulars every week of the year held in the club precinct.
At 76yrs of age Gary is tireless in his commitment to checking the mental health of less experienced Lifesavers and lives the values of SLSA every day by creating better Australians in our community.
Glenn Stone
Manly (NSW)
Glenn has be JAC superintendent. He has been a member of MLSC for 18 years and has been an official at JAC and Open carnivals during his tenure. For over 10 years he has been the competition manager of the club. He has also been entering the club entries for all Nippers, Opens, Seniors and Masters as well as JAC sections. For many years, he has driven the club trailer up and down the East Coast of Australia at every club carnival, to events even when for years his kids weren’t competing. He constantly identifies and highlights any issues with the varied entry systems and rules that SLSA has and informs all the relevant people, competitors and parents and keeps everyone updated. On countless Sundays he spends up to 14 hours entering competitors into events.
He turns up to all the training sessions to watch and help the coaches with gear for the sessions, and he always make himself available to support at anytime when required. He is a massive contributor and yet a quiet achiever and just always makes himself available
Graeme Munro Cunningham
West Beach (SA)
I started at West Beach SLSC as a smiley faced boy, catching waves with my mates under a hot sun and blue skies. Over the years I have trained and assessed thousands of members introducing them to the joys of Surf Life Saving and the beach. I patroled on cold wet windy days and days full of sunshine, white sand and frothing surf. I have saved some lives but also have failed. I have watched the kids, parents and new arrivals I train, including my own family, grow into outstanding members of the community, teaching swimming, training others and saving lives. I have sat on boards for West Beach and the State trying to make better Surf Lifesavers and still now some 45 years later I have a grin on my face every time I catch a wave with my mates.
Hayley Hosking
Seacliff (SA)
Taking out one of the major awards at the SLSA National Awards of Excellence, Hayley Hosking is the 2022 Australian Youth Surf Lifesaver of the Year.
Hayley is a committed and dependable member of Surf Life Saving. She has been involved in Surf Life Saving since she was a Nipper and gained her Bronze Medallion in 2017.
Hayley is leading the way for the youth at Seacliff SLSC, as she was Seacliff’s youngest Patrol Captain last season and represented only a handful of female Patrol Captains.
Hayley volunteers throughout SLSSA in many capacities including her efforts with Life Saving, education, and competition. At the age of 19, Hayley is an enthusiastic member of the South Australian Emergency Operations Group in her role as an RWC Operator, belonging to the inaugural all-female squad. She completed an incredible 400 Patrol hours last season proving herself to be instrumental to the frontline Life Saving service. Her enthusiastic drive saw her don the red and yellow for not only Seacliff SLSC but also Goolwa and Grange SLSC, as well as the RWCs and the JRBs. She was a vital part of a mass rescue at the North Haven breakwater in which she represented SLSSA by working seamlessly with SAPOL.
Ivan Power
Bronte (NSW)
Ivan is a Gold Medallion holder and experienced patroler at Bronte Surf Club. Ivan developed the “Rainbow Beaches” initiative and worked with ‘Lifesavers with Pride’ and Surf Life Saving colleagues to bring this to clubs across Australia. Rainbow Beaches celebrates all forms of diversity in our clubs & communities with a theme that “everyone is welcome at the beach”, using rainbow colours to activate patrols, beach equipment, Nippers and related community events. From humble beginnings at Bronte just a couple of years ago, this simple & effective celebration of the diverse & inclusive nature of our movement has been embraced by Surf Life Saving at local, state & national levels, with over 100 clubs across Australia expected to celebrate a Rainbow Beaches day in 2023.
Jacinta Day
Seacliff (SA)
Involved in a variety of aspects and engaged to assist our club develop and continue to grow and offer the best possible experiences to our members and volunteers. Currently undertaking the role of President I am also a competitor, official, involved in mentoring and most importantly a mum to 2 amazing young men.
I enjoy all aspects of Surf Life Saving and have developed my skills in areas I didn’t know would be possible. The opportunities are amazing and it is great being able to spend time with lots of like minded people.
Jay Moss
Jan Juc (VIC)
Jay has been heavily involved in the Jan Juc SLSC since joining as a Nipper. He has gone onto participate in all parts of club life including competing in summer carnivals, patrolling as a patrol captain and helping volunteer at key club events. Jay holds the Gear Coordinator role at Jan Juc. He works hard to ensure all the patrol equipment is in perfect condition during and before the season. You will always be able to find Jay at the club, fixing boards and tubes as well as giving up his time to ensure the club’s competition gear is in perfect condition. Jay also enjoys helping train younger members, especially helping build their confidence in ski and board skills.
Jayden Redfern
Terrigal (NSW)
I am 17 years old and started my SLS journey when I was 6 as a little Nipper. I have been involved in many areas of service and competition over all those years. I hold BM, ART, First Aid, SMAR, Silver Medallion Patrol Captain, IRB Crew and IRB Drivers Awards. In November 2022 I will hopefully complete my Gold Medallion. I have won the CC Junior Lifesaver of the Year, Terrigal SLSC Youth Volunteer (2021) and Youth Clubperson of the Year (2021, 2022) for my leadership and service across all facets of Surf Life Saving. I was also selected to participate in the NSW Surf Life Saving Youth Leadership Programs (Youth Opportunity Makers) and NSW IRB representative team that competed at the Australian Championships (July 2022). I have completed my Bronze and Solver Duke of Edinburgh awards and am almost finished my gold award through SLS, with my SLS work contributing to both skills and service aspects. I love everything about SLS especially all the people I have met, opportunities I have had as a young person and the ability to give back to my community.
Jennifer Wood
Mullaloo (WA)
We’ve been involved with Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club since 2006. You might say our whole family “dived in”! Over the years I’ve been an Age Group Liaison, then Age Group Manager, Trainer & Assessor, Nippers Board Coach, Masters Competitor (Board & Ski), MC’d various events including our annual Ted Scott Marathon, Board Director and Vice Captain of my Patrol. I qualified for my SCR in 2011 and a Surf Coach that same year. In 2014 I achieved my Bronze Medallion and by 2015 I was well and truly hooked with coaching kids on boards, so then qualified as a Development Coach. There’s nothing more gratifying than being involved in our Mullaloo Surf Life Saving community and I’m immensely proud of the contribution we all make in belonging to such an organisation. To witness, and be part of, a child’s journey in developing to become competent in the water is hugely rewarding. Being part of something bigger than oneself is even more so!
Jess Menzies
Newport (NSW)
I got my Bronze Medallion when I turned 15 in 2005 and commenced patrolling. Since then I have also been heavily involved in training SRC, Bronze and ARTC. Once I was able to, I began assessing for the same awards. I gained my Certificate IV in Training and Assessing and began facilitating Spinal Management and the Training Officers Certificate courses. I am also involved in mentoring new trainers to the Club.
I have been involved in Newport’s Management committee for the past 13 years as Vice Club Captain and Club Captain ensuring that Patrols are run smoothly and proficiencies have been completed.
In addition to my regular patrols, training and assessing, I am also involved in Branch Support Operations as a Duty Officer. I have taken on this role over the last 3 years and enjoy being able to assist clubs whilst on patrols and in emergency situations.
John Holt
Cronulla (NSW)
John Holt was the original Ironman.
A uniquely talented waterman, John’s skills in all facets of surf lifesaving made him one of the sport’s first legends. He has won dozens of State, National and international titles, including the inaugural World Ironman title. Representing at every level, ‘Holtie’ carried the hopes of Cronulla, NSW and Australia, and never failed to disappoint.
After an incomparable career, John turned his focus to his local surveying business and triathlon. As expected, Holtie became a dominant force in a second sport and established a highly successful reputation in the business community.
After six decades as a member, Holtie can be found every Sunday morning at Cronulla, running around the beach as Nipper Age Manager. A Life Member and the local legend that continues to help the next generation of kids to become CSLSC athletes and enjoy surf lifesaving.
John Sutherland
North Steyne (NSW)
I am nominating a very special and well-loved member of the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club. Jack Sutherland, at 84 years young, is North Steyne’s Deputy President for the 6th season in a row. For 69 years, Jack has been volunteering at North Steyne. He joined as a young man in 1953 and in 2008 became a Life Member. In addition to his Deputy President’s role, Jack is a very active member of the Club and is at the beach during the season almost every weekend. He attends all North Steyne functions including social activities, fundraisers, awards ceremonies and other special events. He also represents the Club at local government and Surf Life Saving ceremonies. Jack is the key driver of the A Team, a group of older members who have become our five-hatted BBQ chefs who run a BBQ once a month on a Sunday morning. Consisting of club members who are 75 years+ they are a highly reliable team who just want to help around the Club. Not only do they run the BBQ once a month, but they are called upon during special events when high demand calls for a gun-team. Jack is truly the heart and soul of North Steyne. He is the heart because of his passion and love for the Club and the soul as he holds the memories, traditions and pride which he shares with others and passes down to the younger generation.
Jonathan Farrell
Freshwater (NSW)
Jonathan is always there for an assessment, a proficiency, a patrol and a shoulder or ear. He is truly a club-first individual who is ready to help out and donate his time, knowledge and experience to those who are keen to learn and compete. He has performed water safety for numerous carnivals including Aussie Titles all the way back to the 90s, and has done so without needing gratitude or recognition. WIth over 50 years experience and service to SLS, he is one of the most experienced Lifesavers on the northern beaches.
Julie Redfern
Terrigal (NSW)
Julie embodies an outstanding, contemporary and dedicated SLS volunteer. She is an inspiring single Mum, devotes hundreds of volunteer hours to SLS each year on top of working full time. Her contemporary approach enables her to balance volunteering on top of significant work and family commitments. She is always positive, supportive and inclusive. This was best evidenced by her winning the 2022 NSW Woman of Excellence based on her professional and volunteer service. Julie came into SLS as a Nipper parent 10 years ago and her volunteerism has spanned areas of SLS since that time. Despite having a medical disability, Julie holds BM, First Aid, ART and Silver Medallion Patrol Captain awards. She has been an Age Manager, is an official and a Board member of Terrigal SLSC for several years. She also volunteers on the SLSNSW Awards selection panel and coordinates the member retention and recognition program at Terrigal SLSC.
Kimberly Johns
Bronte (NSW)
Kimberly is the beating heart of Bronte Surf Club. She came to the club over a decade ago as a paid admin and was inspired to complete her Bronze shortly thereafter. While, she continues to work for the club (and does an outstanding job of that), her volunteer hours and dedication eclipses her paid work. She is a volunteer member of the Club’s Board of Management (responsible for Surf Sports). She is a Patrol Vice Captain, she leads the board training skills groups for experienced members and those looking to improve their skills, as well as doing weekly ocean swimming training with our Bronzies. She rallies the troops at Masters carnivals and teaches kids on the autism spectrum surf safety on Dippers Saturdays. She has racked up over 100 patrol hours for many years running. She is always a smiling face on the beach, she knows everyone club member’s name and she brings the spirit to our club and to Surf Life Saving more generally in a hundred different ways every season.
Levi Johnson
Alexandra Headland (QLD)
As soon as he was eligible, Levi completed all the requirements to begin patrol. In the first patrol season, he joined 3 patrols and volunteered consistently with these teams. Mathew Molinia

Matt started as the Nipper coordinator and has basically worked his way through every committee position that there is. He is now our President. He’s also been heavily involved in Branch, organising carnivals. Matt is our link to all things that are Surf Life Saving, he works tirelessly to benefit our club and the greater community. He was recently helping training IRB drivers and had an accident, he fractured his C7, it wasn’t a bad fracture as he walked away from it, but having to wear a neckbrace is the only thing that’s ever slowed him down!

Matthew Taylor
Anglesea (VIC)
I have been involved continuously in Life Saving since joining as a 7 year old Nipper in 1983. I have been supported and mentored by a wide variety of people both from within Anglesea and from other clubs. My involvement has spanned all facets of Life Saving from Nippers, competition, patrolling and training and development. Life Saving is a big family that welcomes people from a variety of different backgrounds. My experience is that it embraces and celebrates what you can do and what you can contribute and not where you are from.
Meredith Wood
Seacliff (SA)
Meredith Wood has been a member at Seacliff SLSC since 1997 and has been the U6 age group leader for approximately 20 seasons, currently still undertaking the role with some support. In her early 70’s Meredith is an active and engaged volunteer who continues to contribute through patrols and volunteering to assist in the bistro at our club.
With an amazing amount of patience and willingness to share her skills to ensure the next generation of young Lifesavers have a fun and positive introduction to their SLS journey, Meredith is a reassuring figure to the parents and children who are new to the club. Previously an active (and decorated) competitor in Masters beach events and surf boats, Meredith continues to regularly contribute to the patrols
Nixy (Nicole) Krite
Seacliff (SA)
On the 18th of October 2010 at 3.05pm I became a general member of a Surf Life Saving club, when my kids started Nippers.Flipped a few egg and bacon rolls on the BBQ and got involved in the social side of a Surf club.
At the age of 38, the most unfit I have ever been in my entire life, a busy successful career, wife, two kids, P&C mum, and loads of mental baggage, I embarked on becoming a Volunteer Lifesaver and changing my work life balance.
Completing my 10th year of service to the community as a Volunteer Lifesaver, 2,941 patrol hours, 621 patrols, fitter, stronger, a lifetime of memories created, lives saved, goals kicked, and friends made.
If you had asked me on the first day of Bronze training, where do you see yourself in 10 years I wouldn’t have thought for one minute I would achieve the things I have at my age and found a whole new family and friends
Who would of thought I would be:
A Volunteer Lifesaver
An RWC operator and trainer
An IRB trainer, Assessor, coach and competitor
A Surf Rescue 30 Skipper, Driver, Crew and Trainer
A Captain of Life Saving at my club
A secretary
A SLSA Women’s Mentor
A Patrol Captain
A Duty Officer
I love Surf Life Saving and I can’t imagine my life without it.
Every weekend is spent across our coastline alongside outstanding members, saving lives and preventing the loss of life.
Thank you SLSA and to all the members who gave me their time to educate and inspire me.

Owen is a very proud member of Garie, he willingly works to full capacity, always with a ready smile. He has in recent past years held the position of club finance officer, and at this moment holds the position of club gear steward. Apart from always having our club at the forefront of his commitments, Owen serves the wider beach going community by patrolling with the support operations group as a jet ski operator, is near the completion of his UAV operators’ certificate and has recently began training as a crew member with Sydney’s ORB 30. Owen is an absolute all-rounder, where he can be found assisting catering, housing and keeping our gear in top shape, patrolling and consistently updating and maintaining his skills as a Surf Lifesaver and leader in our club.
Peter Anderson
Surfers Paradise (QLD)
At 85, Peter is probably one of the country’s oldest truly active Surf Lifesavers. He has a career total of over 10,000 hours including beach, RWC and Duty Officer, likely rivaling most in the organisation.
He’s still patrolling the beaches on a rostered team and additionally volunteers for the Dawn Patrol setup from first light at Surfers Paradise, where he tirelessly brings down all the gear and equipment, often on his own, just to make it easy for the morning patrols. He’s been doing this for over 20 years.
He’s still active as a Duty Officer and only recently “retired” from the RWC service. When I’m 84, I hope I’m still mobile, let alone operating an RWC in the surf no less! Peter’s passion and dedication is truly amazing.

Peter Graeme Kelly
Avoca (NSW)
My father passed on the 4th December this year. It was on his passing I learned he put the first all-female squad through their bronze medallion. He was also instrumental in IRB surf craft being on our beaches today. The councils didn’t want them until he proved their worth, saving someone in 20 foot surf. He was also one of the first to help design the prop guard.
I feel my father deserves recognition for his outstanding achievements towards Surf Life Saving in Australia.
Peter Madden
South Narrabeen (NSW)
Peter Madden is a Life Member and President (again). He has held many positions in the Club working his way from Age Manager and on the Committee of our Bush to Beach Program since 2006. He puts in huge hours at the Club which is not always noticed. Does a lot of maintenance and building at the club. If something needs to be done, you go to Pete. The Club has won many awards under his Leadership. Very well respected at Branch. The List goes on!

He is also a current Level 2 Official – acting as sectional and carnival referee at many events throughout the season. Ray is very passionate about Surf Life Saving – it has been in his life for so long that it will continue to be for as long as it can. He is driven and dedicated to making sure Lifesavers continue to become valuable members of each club. He is a proactive, friendly, lovable guy who has a great rapport with and is respected by all patrolling members both young and old.
Rick T Dalgrin
Darwin (NT)
Rick describes himself as a highly active and motivated guy and his dynamic career history spanning military service, property sales, hospitality and tourism bear that out.
Having criss-crossed the country from Perth to Queensland and the Top End in pursuit of challenges and success, he won’t be phased by the large territory he’ll be covering, based in Darwin.
Rick joined the Australian Army Reserve in the early 1980’s, and he has served in various roles ever since, including as a medic. He counts his postings with the Pilbara Regiment in Karratha and to Norforce (North-West Mobile Force) on surveillance and reconnaissance of the remote areas of Northern Australia among the highlights.
In the property arena, Rick was an early pioneer of internet use, turning his Kombi into a virtual office as he was travelling far and wide to do deals. He has brokered major sales from Fremantle, where he was a top auction sales person with Ray White, to Noosa where he developed an innovative web-based property company.
With OTP, Rick’s talent for property, his military training and leadership skills, plus diverse experience in admin, catering, and as a tour guide, will all be put to great use.

Rod has been involved with Surf Life Saving at Bungan Beach since he was at school. He was a part of the Barker College program when a student and apart from some time in the UK, he has patroled here ever since. It has been a very rare year that Rod’s patrol hours numbered less than 100. This was not enough for Rod! He has held numerous positions on committees and has served two successful stints as Club President. Still not enough for him, Rod is a TAF and has been an Assessor for SNB (Sydney Northern Beaches branch) for many a year. More recently he has also added jetski duties to his portfolio. Rod also volunteers to help train a variety of awards at Bungan and for Branch. He was recently elected as Director of Education for the SNB. Rod has also done several stints in flood relief efforts in the last two years. Rod is revered and highly respected in both Club and Branch and thus is a worthy candidate of Legend (albeit “Hidden”) status.
Romilly Madew
Bilgola (NSW)
It’s hard to call Romilly a hidden legend since she does so much in sight. She has been our Club President for one, which of course is a highly visible role. Just like her husband however, she does so much both in plain view and under the surface where people do not notice. The very fact that I can’t even capture all the hats she wears in SLS is testament to her contribution. After stepping down as President due to a busy CEO role, she stayed on the committee as media officer where she does an excellent job capturing what goes on at the club. She is a Duty Officer on the Northern Beaches, Surfcom operator, Patrol Captain, on various panels and committees and more. Rom is a superstar with a vast contribution to Surf Life Saving that can’t be quantified.

A single change could be implemented to improve the volunteer experience within the movement.
Tea implemented our first Pink Patrol and promoted the Save Like a Girl LSV initiative. This was an invaluable experience for our club’s female youth patrollers as they got to hear from successful women leaders in the community and learn about those quality leadership traits. Tea was also instrumental in several rescues performed at the club throughout the season that I was involved in and she also performed a tube rescue herself. Bringing a lady in an inflatable object back to shore that was being blown out by strong northerly winds.
